Corinthians draw another blank, 11-match unbeaten run ends

On the night of last Sunday, 21, Corinthians interrupted a positive sequence as a visitor and was defeated 1 to 0 by Sport, at Ilha do Retiro, in Pernambuco. The result marked the end of a series of 11 consecutive games with goals scored, something that had not happened since July.

The last time Dorival Júnior's team left the field without shaking the nets was in the 0-0 draw with Cruzeiro, on July 23, for the 16th round of the Brasileirão, at Neo Química Arena. On that occasion, although not very productive offensively, Timão managed to neutralize the then leader of the competition.

After that duel, Corinthians started a sequence of 11 matches between Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil: six victories, three draws and two defeats, always managing to score at least one goal. In three of these matches, in fact, the team scored more than one.

Since Dorival's arrival, the team has improved defensively, especially in aerial plays, but has struggled to find regularity in attack. After the break for the Club World Cup, the coach managed to balance the sector and the numbers improved: in 16 games, there were seven victories, four draws and five defeats. Only in three of them Corinthians did not score — against Cruzeiro, Sport and in the 2-0 defeat to São Paulo at Morumbis.

The task has been even more difficult due to the absences. Yuri Alberto, who returned three games ago, has not scored in this return. Memphis, with a thigh edema, missed two matches, while Rodrigo Garro had a calf injury and will be out for a month.

Against Sport, Dorival also did not have young Gui Negão, who was suspended. He started Yuri and Vitinho, but the duo produced little. In the second half, he used Talles Magno — who has not scored in ten games — and Romero, without goals since April. None of the attempts changed the scenario, and Timão ended up defeated.
