Corinthians fade late, lose Paulista Feminino final opener

On the afternoon of this Saturday (29), Corinthians began their fight for the title of the Women's Basketball Paulista Championship. Playing at the Sesi Araraquara Gymnasium, in the interior of São Paulo, the Furiosas visited the home team in the opening of the best-of-five series for the state decision. After leading the score for most of the match, the team suffered a breakdown in the final two periods, allowing a comeback and losing 64 x 50.

For the decisive match, coach Bruno Guidorizzi fielded a starting five consisting of Yasmin Gonçalves, Licinara, Alana Gonçalo, Thayná Silva, and Tássia. On the bench, Glenda Maria, Tayná, Jamile, Bia Oliveira, Jaqueline, Rhayssa, and Júlia Mansilha were available.

The match had a devastating start for Sesi Araraquara, who dominated the actions and quickly opened an 11 x 0 lead on the scoreboard, with Corinthians scoring only in the fourth minute of the period. From then on, the teams exchanged points, with the home team maintaining a comfortable lead on the scoreboard and winning the first quarter 21 x 13.

In the second quarter, however, the Corinthians team responded, in what was their best moment in the match. After seeing the deficit momentarily return to 11 points, the Alvinegro staged a meteoric comeback, scoring 16 points in a row and turning the game around. Taking advantage of Araraquara's lack of focus, the Alvinegras further extended their lead, winning the quarter by an impressive 22 x 7 and going into halftime with a 35 x 28 lead.

The third period was very balanced, with the home team scoring again and pressuring Corinthians, seeking to turn the score around – which they managed for a few moments in the quarter, but it was reversed again, and even with the team winning the quarter 14 x 9, the advantage in the match was still with Timão, at 44 x 42.

However, the Corinthians game completely fell apart in the final ten minutes. Making many mistakes in attack, the team saw Araraquara score 12 x 1 in the first six minutes, turning the game around and opening a nine-point lead in the match. The team tried to react, but the home team not only stayed ahead but gradually increased their lead, winning the quarter 22 x 6 and the game 64 x 50 – their biggest lead in the match.

With the result, the Alvinegro falls behind in the title race and is now under pressure for the two home games they are entitled to in the duel against Sesi Araraquara. The matches, which will take place at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium, will be held next Sunday (7) and Monday (8), at 4 pm and 8 pm (both Brasília time), respectively.
