Corinthians idol recalls rival’s downfall in the Paulistão

The forward and Corinthians idol Tupãzinho gave an exclusive interview to Central do Timão ahead of the Majestic derby and recalled the 1990 Brazilian Championship title, as well as a controversy involving this Sunday's rival in the Paulista Championship, São Paulo.

Speaking about São Paulo, Tupãzinho emphasized that in his view, the rival was relegated in the 1990 Paulista, a championship marked by regulatory controversies: “I know that São Paulo was relegated, I don't remember exactly how the games went, but São Paulo was indeed relegated.”

Tupãzinho is eternally marked in Corinthians' history for scoring the championship-winning goal in 1990 against São Paulo itself and made a point to recall the photo that became iconic of the moment of his sliding goal against the Tricolor: “This photo marked the whole of Brazil, it was at the entrance of the Corinthians Museum, you can see from the start of the play, the nutmeg I did, under the legs, I passed to Fabinho, Fabinho shot, the ball rebounded, and with the slide, it was left there, that photo is wonderful.”

Tupãzinho joined Corinthians from São Bento de Sorocaba in 1990 alongside defender Guinei. With the club, the forward won the 1990 Brazilian Championship, the 1995 Paulista, and also Corinthians' first Copa do Brasil in 1995, against Grêmio. In total, he played 341 matches and scored 52 goals wearing the black and white jersey, leaving the club in 1996.
