Corinthians idol Renato Augusto announces retirement as a footballer

On the morning of Thursday, September 18, the midfielder and star Renato Augusto officially announced his retirement as a football player. At 37 years old, he had been without a club for four months since terminating his contract with Fluminense and made the announcement this week.

“The time has really come to say goodbye. Or maybe just a see you soon to football. It's time to turn to the other side of life, give more attention to the kids, go back to being a “full-time” dad, go back to being a “full-time” husband. The time has come to hang up my boots“, said the now former player to GE.

Remembered for his technique and mastery on the field, Renato Augusto revealed that he received inquiries to start a career as part of technical staff or as a director – a path followed by Paulinho, his former teammate. However, at the start of his retirement, the focus is on his personal life.

“Today I think about being close to the things I want to do, for example, understanding what the other side of the club is like. Because we only see it from inside the field. We see football from the inside out. What I want to see now is from the outside in. I want to see how it works, how it’s prepared. Start with other coaches, participate, maybe do internships or something. Participate with directors. I want to learn now. See the other side of football that I haven't experienced yet!”, the player commented.

Renato played for a few clubs in his career, starting his journey at Flamengo, the team he supported as a child. He had a stint at Bayer Leverkusen at a young age until he was signed by Corinthians, where he had the greatest connection with a club in his history.

At the People's Team, the eternal number 8 won the Paulistão, Recopa Sudamericana, and the Brasileirão in 2015, when he was the championship's star. On the field, there were 243 games, 43 assists, and 30 goals scored, including his second stint, which lasted from 2021 to 2023.

His last club was Fluminense, as mentioned. While playing for the Laranjeiras club, a moment with Corinthians stood out: in a match between the two teams, he entered the field and was applauded by the Faithful Fans at Neo Química Arena. Since then, there have been no more encounters.
