Corinthians left-back shines in key stat during team's Brasileirão win

With a goal from midfielder Charles in the second half, Corinthians defeated Vitória 1-0 at Barradão Stadium, in a match valid for the 30th round of the Brazilian Championship, on the afternoon of last Saturday, October 25. The result placed the Alvinegro in tenth position with 39 points (10 wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 32 goals scored and 35 conceded).

According to data provided by Data Fut, Corinthians’ left-back Matheus Bidu won 20 out of 22 duels contested – a record for the 2025 Brazilian Championship – and the highest mark in this category for a Corinthians player in a national competition match since 2015.

With a 90% success rate in this aspect, the left-back was also the first player since 2015 to win more than 20 duels in a single Brazilian Championship match. According to Sofascore, the Corinthians defender also recorded six tackles, six clearances, five balls recovered, and an 82% pass accuracy (40 accurate passes out of 49 attempts), maintaining a rating of 8.1, the highest among all players in the match.

In this year’s Brazilian Championship, the previous record in a match belonged to Vasco’s right-back Paulo Henrique, who won 19 out of 24 duels contested in the match against Sport at São Januário. Considering a Corinthians player, the best mark until then was from the young forward Wesley, a club academy product now playing in Saudi football, who won 18 out of 24 duels in the Derby against Palmeiras in the 2024 edition of the Brasileirão.

In the current season, Matheus Bidu has accumulated four goals and four assists in 39 matches. The number 21 started the season as a starter – still under coach Ramón Díaz – but lost his spot at the end of February and beginning of March, with the arrival of Argentine Fabrizio Angileri.

Angileri, however, saw his performance drop after the Paulista Championship final against Palmeiras, combined with the dismissal of Ramón Díaz 20 days later. As a result, Bidu regained his spot and became an undisputed starter after Dorival Júnior’s arrival at the end of April.

Matheus Bidu joined Corinthians at the beginning of 2023 after standing out in the previous year’s Série B playing for Cruzeiro, who finished as champions, on loan from Guarani, Campinas. In total, he has played 111 matches in the Corinthians shirt, with 53 wins, 26 draws, and 32 losses – nearly 56% success rate, with seven goals and eight assists.

So far, the left-back has won one title with the club: the 2025 Paulista Championship, against Palmeiras in the grand final. Bidu is experiencing his best moment at the club in the past year and a half, playing an important role in the team’s surge in the last Brasileirão and establishing himself since Dorival Júnior’s arrival.
