Corinthians lose FIFA case, must pay R$6m to Charles' old club

Corinthians has suffered another defeat at FIFA in disputes over transfer-related debts. This time, the lawsuit was filed by Midtjylland, from Denmark, the former club of midfielder Charles. The highest entity in football ruled in favor of the Danes, who are entitled to receive 1 million euros (about R$ 6.26 million at the current exchange rate).

According to the lawsuit, when Corinthians closed the signing of Charles, the club committed to paying 1.6 million euros, divided into two installments of 400 thousand euros and another of 800 thousand euros. However, the club did not pay the last and largest part of the agreement.

In addition to requiring the payment of the outstanding installment, FIFA imposed a fine of 200 thousand euros and determined an addition of 12% annual interest on the overdue amount, counting from March 16, 2025. Timão will also have to bear 85 thousand euros (R$ 532 thousand) in legal costs.

The debt is divided as follows: 800 thousand euros (R$ 5.01 million) - final installment of the purchase of Charles; 200 thousand euros (R$ 1.25 million) - fine imposed by FIFA; 12% per year - interest on the unpaid amount; 85 thousand euros (R$ 532 thousand) - lawsuit costs.

If the decision is not complied with, Corinthians runs the risk of suffering a new transfer ban, preventing the club from registering players. However, the expectation is that the board will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), as it has done in other recent cases.

With this conviction, Corinthians accumulates R$ 135.36 million in lawsuits pending at the CAS. Among them, it has already lost cases against Santos Laguna, from Mexico (R$ 40 million), and against Paraguayan Matías Rojas (R$ 45 million). Recently, the club also renegotiated with Toluca, from Mexico, the debt for the signing of striker Pedro Raul, which totals 8 million dollars (R$ 42.8 million).

The risk of new defeats is worrying, as the punishment can lead not only to restrictions in the transfer market, but also to the loss of points in championships, which would put the club's stay in Serie A at risk.
