Corinthians lose to Pinheiros away, Paulista de Basquete hopes take a hit

Corinthians started at a disadvantage in the best-of-three series of the quarterfinals of the Paulista Basketball Championship. On Sunday morning, at the Henrique Villaboim Gymnasium, Timão was defeated by Pinheiros by 96 to 93 and now needs a victory in the next match to stay alive in the fight for qualification.

To start the match, coach Jece Leite lined up the quintet formed by Elinho, Davaunta Thomas, Rafael Munford, Victão, and Gabriel Novaes. Throughout the game, Tico Farias, Kaique Victor, Kauan Raymundo, Elyjah Clark, and Lucas Cauê also got minutes on the court.

The great highlight of Corinthians was the forward/center Victão, who scored 26 points, in addition to contributing with four rebounds and two assists. On the Pinheiros side, David Sloan had a similar performance, with 26 points, three rebounds, and six assists.

With the setback, Timão necessarily needs to win the second game of the series to force the decision. The confrontation takes place next Wednesday (24), at 8 pm, at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium. If necessary, the decisive match will be held the following day, Thursday (25), also at 8 pm, at Parque São Jorge.

The black and white team reached the quarterfinals after finishing the first phase with the third-best campaign, recording seven victories and three defeats. In the realignment, it maintained the same position, adding four victories and four setbacks against the best-placed teams.

Pinheiros, which had only finished in sixth place in the first phase, with five victories and five defeats, showed reaction in the next stage and finished as the leader of its group, accumulating eight victories and only two defeats against opponents who were among the last six placed.
