Corinthians’ main full-back is the most fouled defender in Brasileirão

Matheus Bidu, Corinthians’ left-back, has been one of the players most targeted by heavy marking from rivals in 2024. Data from the Brazilian Championship confirms this: among all defenders in the competition, no one has been fouled as much as the Corinthians player in the first 33 rounds.

According to a survey by the profile Por Fora das Quatro Linhas on X (formerly Twitter), the Corinthians full-back has suffered 52 fouls in 23 matches, averaging 2.26 infractions per game.

This rate puts the player above all other most-targeted defenders in the tournament. The runner-up in the ranking, Lucas Ramon from Mirassol, has suffered 44 fouls, eight fewer than Bidu. In third place is Fabiano from Ceará, with 40 infractions received.

Despite the high number of fouls suffered, Bidu has not missed games due to injuries directly related to fouls. His absences in the Brasileirão occurred due to physical wear (possibly aggravated by constant contact) and suspensions.

While having the most targeted defender by opponents, Corinthians appears in another noteworthy statistic: it is the club that needs to commit the fewest fouls to receive a yellow card. The team is warned every 4.76 infractions, an average that has fueled internal discussions about the refereeing stance throughout the championship.

This discomfort became evident in recent days at Parque São Jorge. Corinthians was not present at the first meeting of the CBF Refereeing Working Group, held on Monday, and sent a letter to the entity requesting that referee Edina Alves Batista no longer be assigned to the club’s matches.

This statement came after the 2-1 defeat to Red Bull Bragantino on November 5, marked by two expulsions and harsh criticism from president Osmar Stabile, executive Fabinho Soldado, and coach Dorival Júnior.

Now, after the FIFA break, Corinthians is preparing to return to the field on the 20th, against São Paulo, at 7:30 PM, at Neo Química Arena, for the 34th round of the Brasileirão, trying to avoid new clashes with refereeing.
