Corinthians match defensive streak last seen in May

On the afternoon of last Sunday (2), Corinthians defeated Grêmio 2-0 in a match valid for the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship, held at Neo Química Arena. With this result, the Paulista Alvinegro returned to a positive streak that hadn’t happened in almost six months.

The victory over Grêmio marked the third consecutive match in which Corinthians did not concede a goal, a feat that hadn’t occurred since May of this year. The last time Timão’s defense was breached was in the 3-1 defeat to Santos on October 15. Since then, the team has beaten Atlético-MG and Vitória by a score of 1-0, as well as the team from Rio Grande do Sul by 2-0.

The last such streak happened between May 15 and 24, when Corinthians managed to go beyond three games and went four matches without conceding a goal. There were three consecutive 1-0 victories, against Racing-URU, Santos, and Grêmio Novorizontino, as well as a 0-0 draw against Atlético-MG.

Timão’s good moment reflects the team’s defensive improvement since the arrival of Dorival Júnior. In 34 games under the coach’s command, the Paulista Alvinegro did not concede a goal in 17, which is exactly 50% of the matches.

Before the current coach’s arrival, the team was led by Ramón Díaz. Under the Argentine, the defense performed worse in this aspect. In 27 matches in charge of the team in 2024, Corinthians finished without conceding in nine, equivalent to 31%. The previous period, however, featured a more productive attack, which even won the Paulista Championship title.

Timão returns to the field this Wednesday (5), at 7:00 PM (Brasília time), to face Red Bull Bragantino at Nabi Abi Chedid Stadium, in Bragança Paulista, for the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship.
