Corinthians on five-game run with leaky defence, many goals conceded

Even with a generally good performance, Dorival Júnior's Corinthians is going through a rough patch defensively. In the last five games, the team conceded goals in all of them, totaling nine goals conceded. The coach even spoke about this after the draw against Botafogo.

Timão's most recent challenges were against Botafogo, as mentioned, Cruzeiro, São Paulo, Ceará, and Red Bull Bragantino. In this sequence, Corinthians managed only one victory, in the Majestoso, where they conceded just one goal. Besides the draw against Glorioso, there were three other defeats, which took away the club's chance to stabilize in the standings.

The inconsistency becomes even more apparent when compared to the previous five games. In that stretch, Corinthians had four wins and only one loss, conceding three goals, all in the away loss to Santos. Additionally, eight goals were scored in the previous sequence, compared to six in the most recent period.

One of the factors complicating Corinthians' performance, both defensively and offensively, is the lack of focus at the start of matches. Of the 36 goals conceded under Dorival Júnior, 14 happened in the first 15 minutes of either the first or second half – see the breakdown below.

Corinthians is looking to end this poor run in the final stretch of the Brasileirão, aiming to build momentum for the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil. The next match takes place this Wednesday (3rd), against Fortaleza, in the penultimate round of the championship, at Arena Castelão.
