Corinthians probe spending as prosecutors press on Andrés Sanchez

The former president of Corinthians, Andrés Sanchez, appeared last Monday (1st) at Parque São Jorge, accompanied by his lawyers, after being summoned by the Justice Committee of the Deliberative Council to clarify possible improper personal expenses made with the corporate card during his last term, between 2018 and 2020.

Although Andrés had already provided explanations to Cori (Advisory Council) previously, the official inquiry was only now initiated by the Justice Committee, which continued the internal investigation process. The tendency is that other involved parties will also be summoned in the coming days. The hearings will be monitored by the president of the Ethics Committee, Leonardo Pantaleão.

In parallel with the internal process, Andrés also faces a complaint from the São Paulo Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP-SP) for aggravated and continued embezzlement, money laundering, and falsification of tax documents.

In October, the Corinthians finance department sent all invoices related to the three years of the former president’s term to the Justice Committee. After analysis, the body identified approximately R$ 190,000 in suspicious expenses, related to hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, furniture stores, electronics, automotive services, and even an air taxi company. According to the Committee, there is no evidence that such expenses are connected to the club’s needs, and no receipts were attached to the expenses.

Before Andrés, the Committee had already heard from former financial director Matias Ávila, who testified via videoconference. Once the analysis is completed, the case will proceed to the Ethics and Discipline Committee, chaired by Pantaleão, who is responsible for issuing the opinion that will be forwarded to the Deliberative Council, to be put to a vote by Romeu Tuma Júnior.

Public Prosecutor demands speed from the Court in complaint against Andrés and former manager

While Corinthians conducts its internal investigation, prosecutor Cassio Roberto Conserino, from MP-SP, sent a petition last Monday to Judge Márcia Mayumi Okoda Oshiro, head of the 2nd Specialized Court for Tax Crimes, Criminal Organization, and Asset and Money Laundering, requesting that the complaint filed on October 14, 2025, be analyzed more quickly.

In the document, Conserino requests that the case involving Andrés Sanchez and former financial manager Roberto Gavioli be considered by the Judiciary, highlighting the seriousness of the facts. The prosecutor also mentioned that Corinthians is conducting its own investigation into the use of the corporate card.

The complaint from the Public Prosecutor, received 49 days ago, accuses Andrés of the crimes of embezzlement, money laundering, and falsification of tax documents. Gavioli, in turn, is charged with embezzlement and money laundering. It is up to the judge to decide if there is sufficient evidence to make both defendants — a decision that, according to Conserino, is taking longer than expected. If accepted, a criminal case will be opened; if rejected, the case will be closed.

The former president became a target of the Public Prosecutor in August, after the expenses made with the corporate card during his second term became public. According to the complaint, Andrés allegedly used R$ 480,000 of the club’s money for personal expenses, ranging from watches to luxury trips. In addition to the return of the money, the Public Prosecutor asks that he and Gavioli pay R$ 1.1 million to Corinthians, including penalties and compensation.
