Corinthians slip in Paulista table after Derby defeat

On the evening of this Sunday, Corinthians was defeated by Palmeiras 1-0 at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the seventh round of the Paulista Championship. The home loss prevented Timão from taking the lead in the first phase and also caused a drop in the standings for the team led by Dorival Júnior.

With the victory in the Derby, the Barra Funda team reached 15 points and took the runner-up position in the State Championship. Novorizontino remains at the top of the standings after defeating São Bernardo 2-1 and reaching 16 points. In third place is Red Bull Bragantino, with 13 points.

Corinthians, on the other hand, dropped to fifth place and remains with 11 points. Ahead of Timão are Novorizontino and Palmeiras, as well as Red Bull Bragantino in third, and Portuguesa, which occupies the fourth position.

Completing the qualification zone for the quarter-finals are Guarani and Botafogo-SP, both with 11 points, in addition to São Paulo, which has ten. In the current G8 scenario, Corinthians would face Portuguesa in the quarter-finals, away from home.

Still in the race for a spot are Capivariano, with ten points, and Santos, with nine. Mirassol and São Bernardo, both with eight points, as well as Primavera and Noroeste, with seven, still have mathematical chances. At the bottom of the table, Velo Clube is fighting to escape relegation, with five points, while Ponte Preta is already mathematically relegated, with only one point earned.

Corinthians concludes its participation in the first phase of the Paulistão next Sunday, February 15, at 4 p.m., against São Bernardo, at the Primeiro de Maio stadium. Before that, Timão returns to the field on Thursday at 8 p.m., when they face Red Bull Bragantino at the Neo Química Arena for the third round of the Brazilian Championship.
