Corinthians were knocked out of the Paulista by Novorizontino on Saturday, losing 1-0 in Novo Horizonte. It is their sixth elimination by a club outside the state’s big four, and the second this decade.

Meu Timao notes that Corinthians have contested 27 knockout ties in this format, with six exits coming against teams outside the state’s big four.

The first came in 1980, when Ponte Preta advanced after a 1-1 draw in the opener and a 3-0 defeat in the return. In 1989, São José overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 on aggregate.

In 2012, Ponte Preta again eliminated Corinthians at the Pacaembu with a 3-2 win, a match marked by errors from goalkeeper Júlio César, after which Cássio took over in goal. In 2016, Audax prevailed on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Neo Química Arena.

Most recently, in 2023, Ituano advanced on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Neo Química Arena in the quarter-finals.

Corinthians are next in action on Wednesday, 11 March, facing Coritiba at the Neo Química Arena at 21:30 in the Campeonato Brasileiro’s fifth round.
