Corinthians surge in second half to win Copinha Feminina opener

On the afternoon of this Thursday (4th), Corinthians took the field for the first time in the São Paulo Women's Cup. In a match played at CERET, the Sub-20 Brabinhas faced Criciúma and, after a goalless first half, imposed themselves in the second half, defeating the team from Santa Catarina 4-2. The goals were scored by Rayane Pontes, Carol Melo, Rafa Rodrigues, and Dany Pereira.

For the tournament debut, coach Bia Vaz lined up the Brabinhas with a starting team composed of Sophia Trindade; Rafa Rocha, Brunna Meer, Gabi Pires, and Ester; Carol Melo, Helô Camargo, and Gaby Tomé; Manu Olivan, Raissa, and Rayane Pontes. On the bench, the following were available: Ana Morganti, Dany Pereira, Emelym, Rafa Rodrigues, Lara Mel, Dafhiny, Gabi Jordi, Manu Teixeira, and Dulce Maria.

Corinthians started the match pressing and soon created the first chance, with a weak shot from Rayane being blocked. In the fourth minute, after a short corner, the same forward attempted a bold curling shot from the side, but the ball went over. The pressure continued and, in the sixth minute, came the first clear chance, with a beautiful pass from Gaby Tomé that left Raissa one-on-one, but her shot was saved by Malu.

Corinthians' dominance was total. In the eighth minute, Helô Camargo and Rafa Rocha combined on the right, with the latter breaking into the box and shooting just wide. At 16 minutes, another low cross from Helô found Rayane, whose shot was blocked; on the rebound, Raissa sent it wide. Despite controlling the action, Timão couldn't open the scoring and the game went into halftime goalless.

The second half brought the efficiency that was missing in the first. Just three minutes in, Raissa was fouled in the box and Rayane converted the penalty, opening the scoring for Timão. The lead was extended two minutes later, when Carol Melo received from Rayane, dribbled past the defense, and scored the second. Shortly after, in the 21st minute, the Brabinhas scored the third with a low, classy shot from Rafa Rodrigues.

Then, Criciúma tried to mount a comeback, pulling one back in the 23rd minute, when, after a shot hit the post, Smili took advantage of the rebound to score. The Alvinegras, however, scored the fourth goal in the 30th minute, with Dany Pereira. The visitors managed to reduce the deficit again in the final minutes, with Thalita, but the final score was 4-2 for Corinthians.

With this result, Timão earns its first three points in Group A of the Copinha. Now, the team will take the field again this Sunday (7th), to face Flamengo, once again at CERET. The match will take place at 8:00 PM (Brasília time).
