Corinthians temporarily halts sale of spirits at Parque São Jorge

Corinthians released an official statement on the morning of Wednesday, October 1st, announcing that it has temporarily suspended the sale of distilled alcoholic beverages at Parque São Jorge. The measure was implemented immediately and will remain in effect indefinitely, according to the text.

The club justified the decision. According to the statement, the suspension is due to a recommendation from the São Paulo State Clubs Union (Sindiclubes), and as soon as the necessary clarifications are obtained regarding the situation involving the adulteration of distilled beverages in the state's establishments, it will inform its members about the revocation of the prohibition.

In recent weeks, São Paulo has been facing a health crisis due to the discovery of methanol in adulterated beverages, with five confirmed deaths and 22 suspected cases linked to bars in the capital. The police have shut down establishments and seized hundreds of bottles, while state and federal authorities investigate the origin of the contaminated batches.

Among these authorities is the Federal Police, which is investigating possible involvement of organized crime in the scheme, also warning about the risk of underreporting in cases. Methanol is a highly toxic substance typically used as an industrial solvent, and there is a hypothesis that it was added to beverages like vodka, gin, and whiskey in clandestine factories.
