Corinthians to pay builder for poor conditions and unpaid wages

For four months, Corinthians has been complying with a decision from the São Paulo Justice system that ordered the club to compensate and pay a lifetime pension to a 53-year-old construction worker who worked for five years at Parque São Jorge. In the lawsuit, Edmilson claimed to have developed irreversible health problems due to unhealthy working conditions, in addition to reporting unpaid labor entitlements.

The information was initially disclosed by ESPN, which found out that the lawsuit was filed in April 2023, when the worker pointed out that he performed various functions at the Corinthians headquarters, facing exhausting work hours, lack of overtime pay, and working during vacations and club events without due compensation.

Edmilson also claims that due to the tasks and work environment, he developed a severe occupational disease in his back, which resulted in surgery to place plates, screws, and a disc in his spine. Even after the procedure, however, the employee was not reassigned by the club to different duties and ended up being dismissed while still undergoing medical treatment.

According to documents included in the lawsuit, Corinthians also failed to collect the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS) and made union deductions without authorization. The lawyers argued that Edmilson suffered severe physical and functional damages — to the point of losing part of his hearing due to exposure to cement, dust, and noise without the use of protective equipment.

Judge Camila Coelho's decision determined that the club must pay compensation for material damages, a lifetime monthly pension until Edmilson turns 76, compensation for moral damages, and amounts related to salaries, vacations, FGTS after dismissal, overtime, and medium-degree hazard pay. Corinthians began complying with the sentence in July, having paid R$ 155,000 in compensation – the pension amount is still being calculated but could reach up to R$ 6,000 per month.
