Corsican derby suspended for one reason and then postponed for another

The Corsican derby in Ligue 2, between fierce rivals AJ Ajaccio and SC Bastia, was suspended in the 42nd minute with the game at 0-0 on Saturday for one reason before later being postponed for an entirely different reason.

The game, held in Ajaccio, was halted in the 42nd minute after Bastia fans defied the travel ban and made their way into the stands of the Stade Michel-Moretti, clashing with the home supporters. Away fans haven’t been allowed to travel for this particular derby since October 2012. Amid the carnage, the referee sent both sets of players back to the dressing rooms, while the police intervened.

This caused a delay of around one hour and 40 minutes, all the while, the rain hammered down. The island had been put under an orange alert for rain and flooding and as the evening progressed the storm intensified. By the time the issues in the stands had been resolved, the pitch had become unplayable, and, as a result, the Corsican derby between Ajaccio and Bastia was postponed.

A new date for the fixture is yet to be set. Bastia currently sit 8th in Ligue 2, whilst Ajaccio sit 12th.
