After the initial success for the three-man defence, Sergio Conceicao is looking to try his new formation against an even better side, with AC Milan taking on Atalanta tomorrow.

Conceicao switched to the 3-4-3 formation for the game against Udinese last weekend and as Milan won 4-0, the first test was a success. Now, as highlighted by Corriere dello Sport, the manager is curious to see if the new system will hold up against a better team.

Indeed, he will continue with three men at the back for the Rossoneri’s encounter with Atalanta, having worked ‘all week’ on the formation at Milanello. Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia and Strahinja Pavlovic, who started against Udinese, will also play from the first minute tomorrow.

With a positive result tomorrow, as the newspaper concludes, Conceicao will know that the formation actually works and can be relied on for the important season finale. The Udinese win, after all, might have been a fluke or the result of Milan facing a worse team (rather than the formation playing a big part).

That being said, most agree that the 3-4-3 formation suits the Rossoneri’s squad better and there was a noticeable difference in the overall play, not just when the goals were scored.
