MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup continues with Costa Rica meeting Suriname in Group A on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

The two nations will strive to kick off their campaigns with a victory in a competitive group that also includes Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

The encounter will mark the second time Costa Rica and Suriname play each other at the Gold Cup. Los Ticos took a 2-1 win in the 2021 group stage.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica will seek its first Gold Cup trophy in its 17th appearance at the summer spectacle. The nation’s best finish came as runners-up in the 2002 edition.

Managed by Mexican manager Miguel Herrera, a Gold Cup winning manager in the 2015 edition, will seek to lead the Central Americans to glory.

Keylor Navas, Francisco Calvo, and Juan Pablo Vargas headlines the squad as men of experience for Los Ticos. Calvo and Vargas were part of the 2017 squad that reached the tournament Semifinals.

Suriname

Suriname returns to the Gold Cup after making its debut in the 2021 edition. Suriname will seek to get out of the Group Stage for the first time.

Gleofilo Vlijter, the top scorer in the 2019–20 Concacaf Nations League, headlines the options in attack for Suriname. Vlijter found the back of the net against Costa Rica in the 2021 edition.

Warner Hahn, Dion Malone, Ridgeciano Haps also return from the squad that featured in Suriname’s debut campaign.

Costa Rica v. Suriname – A Gold Cup Rematch with History on the Line

Costa Rica and Suriname will square off for just the second time in Concacaf Gold Cup history. Their previous meeting came in the 2021 edition during Group C action on July 16 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida. Suriname struck first through Gleofilo Vlijter (52'), but Costa Rica responded immediately with goals from Joel Campbell (58') and Celso Borges (59') to complete the comeback and claim a 2-1 victory.

Costa Rica Leads the All-Time Series

This match will be the eighth overall between these two sides, with Costa Rica holding a commanding advantage: six wins and one draw. Suriname has yet to register a victory against the Central Americans.

Their most recent encounter ended in a 1-1 draw on October 11, 2024, in Paramaribo during League A Group Stage play of the Concacaf Nations League. Josimar Alcócer gave Costa Rica the lead in the 13th minute, but Gleofilo Vlijter responded for Suriname in the 34th. That draw ended a run of six straight defeats for Suriname against Los Ticos.

Neutral Ground for the Third Time

This will be the third meeting between these nations on neutral soil. The first came back on February 17, 1960, in Havana during the CCC Championship. Costa Rica came out on top with a 3-1 win, thanks to goals from Rubén Jiménez (16'), Alberto Armijo (39'), and Juan José Gámez (74'). August Wooter netted the lone goal for Suriname in the 44th minute.

The second neutral-site showdown came in the 2021 Gold Cup match, where Costa Rica turned the game around in just seven minutes to take the 2-1 win.
