Last week, Pep Guardiola told the Spanish media that neither Stefan Ortega nor Ederson would leave Manchester City during the summer transfer window. Despite Pep Guardiola’s comment, Jordan Campbell reported for The Athletic that Ederson remains open to a move to the Saudi Pro League. If that move were to occur, Manchester City would need a new number-one keeper.
Now a new report from L’Equipe suggests that Manchester City have an interest in signing PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Donnarumma is a fine keeper, one of the best shot-stoppers in world football. But could he become Manchester City’s next number-one keeper? On paper, at least, of course, he could. But a City move for the Italian international appears unrealistic at this stage.
L’Equipe reports that Manchester City and Manchester United are interested in signing Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer. Furthermore, L’Equipe reports that Donnarumma has one more year remaining on his current contract with PSG. PSG have so far been unable to get Donnarumma to sign a contract extension. The L’Equipe report indicates that Manchester City and Manchester United are both interested in signing the Italian international. Lastly, the L’Equipe report suggests that Gianluigi Donnarumma has already spoken to his Italian international teammates about a potential move to the Premier League. Donnarumma is currently on international duty with Italy at the moment.
There is no doubt about Gianluigi Donnarumma’s quality as a goalkeeper. He is arguably the best shot-stopper in European football. Donnarumma played a key role in PSG’s maiden Champions League win this season. His saves were crucial to their run to the final in Munich where they emphatically dispatched Inter Milan 5-nil in the Champions League final. The only weakness in Donnarumma’s game is with his feet. He isn’t elite in this aspect of his game. To put it simply, he is no Ederson in possession. His biggest skill is as a shot-stopper and that’s where his strength lies.
But there are two problems with Manchester City’s reported interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma. One, as of right now it doesn’t seem that Ederson will leave Manchester City. Although there were reports that he was likely to leave City, no move has eventuated at this stage. Unless Ederson leaves Manchester City aren’t in the market for a new number-one keeper. The second issue appears to be is Manchester City’s name being used as a negotiation tactic by Donnarumma’s agent to get a better deal for his client at PSG? That possibility cannot be ruled out.
There is no doubt that Gianluigi Donnarumma has the quality to be Manchester City’s next number-one keeper. The Italian international is one of the best goalkeepers in the game. But, as of right now, a Manchester City move for the Champions League winner appears unlikely at best.
