Newcastle United may enter the mix for Hellas Verona defender Rafik Belghali and, if they do so, ‘could be unstoppable’, it has been claimed in Italy.

The Magpies saw right-back Kieran Trippier depart this summer, with the veteran moving to Wolves on a free transfer and not just reducing the right-back options, but also taking with him significant experience.

Tino Livramento stands as the sole established option at right-back on Tyneside, though Matthias Jaissle can shuffle his options around if needed.

The England international, however, is still working his way back from an injury setback and is a doubt for Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Liverpool.

With fewer than two weeks before the new campaign gets under way, Newcastle are in the market to bring in a right-back and have been looking at options.

Belghali, on the books at Hellas Verona, has now emerged as a potential option, with Newcastle now showing interest in joining the race, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web.

With several clubs already circling, Newcastle would have work to do, but it is suggested that if they do really push ahead for Belghali they ‘could be unstoppable’.

The Algerian is currently valued at around €12m plus, but a bidding contest could drive that figure towards €15m, money that Newcastle could afford to splash, especially on the back of big money sales.

Belghali remaining in Italian football is also a realistic possibility, with Inter Milan and Roma having ‘closely monitoring’ his situation for some time, while Juventus have also made ‘exploratory moves’ and Napoli, Venezia and Fiorentina have been linked with him.

Several of the Italian clubs in the frame could offer Belghali European football while also allowing him to remain in the country where he has established himself.

There is also interest from Marseille, though they need to bring in cash through sales.

The 24-year-old featured regularly for Hellas Verona last season and was been an important figure for Algeria during their World Cup campaign, enhancing his standing in the market.

Newcastle have also been credited with an interest in another right-back from Italian football in the shape of Dodo, whose position at Fiorentina remains uncertain.

With fierce interest in Belghali, Newcastle may need to move quickly if they are serious about signing him.
