Last summer, Club Brugge broke their transfer record when they signed Ukrainian international Roman Yaremchuk from Benfica. Parting with €17m, the returns have been minimal to none. The striker has only scored two goals in 27 games, a far cry from his previous time in the Belgian Pro League when he scored 61 goals for Gent in 152 games. Transfermarkt currently value Yaremchuk at €11m, a large drop off from what Club Brugge spent on him during the 2022 summer window.
Given the amount they spent on him, Club Brugge can’t afford to give up on the striker yet. The 27-year-old could have a second chance, and under a new head coach. Ronny Deila showed during his time at Celtic and recently with Standard Liege that his man management and motivational skills are very impressive. He managed to get the best out of a Standard side that lacked as much talent as other sides around them, but still managed to go into the final game of the season with a fighting chance at the top four.
Deila could be the one that reinvigorates Yaremchuk’s now stuttering career. He looks bereft of confidence, but a summer with Deila and his staff could help him regain that and come out firing. If he does return to the form he showed with Gent, Club Brugge will be a serious force next season. In his last season in Belgium before joining Benfica, Yaremchuck scored 20 goals. To compare that to Club Brugge this year, their top scorer was Hans Vanaken with 14, while Ferran Jutgla was the top scoring striker with 13. Having a head coach that believes in him could be just what Yaremchuk needs.
Hopefully, with Deila in place, we will see the best of the big Ukrainian striker next season, if Club Brugge are willing to stick with him.
