A Wolverhampton councillor has been accused of scaremongering after alleging coins and flares are being hurled at Wolves matches at Molineux, warning lives are at risk. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the claims were aired at a council regulatory committee meeting last month.

Stu Goldsmith, Reform member for Fallings Park, said hooligans file down 50-pence pieces then toss them into lower sections, which he argued could cause severe head injuries, even blindness.

He also alleged flares are being smuggled into the ground, set off in the stands or thrown towards supporters.

Conservative group leader Simon Bennett challenged the remarks, saying any evidence should be passed to police and warning against alarmist claims.

Bennett pointed to a Sports Grounds Safety Authority audit in March 2026 that gave the council’s oversight of Molineux 100 out of 100, rated it low risk and praised safety management.

He said Molineux is a source of pride for the city and urged councillors to back confidence in local institutions rather than undermine them with unsubstantiated claims.

Wolves were contacted for comment. Goldsmith declined to comment further.
