Councillor’s claims of coin and flare attacks at Molineux spark row | OneFootball

A councillor has been accused of scaremongering after warning that coin and flare throwing at Wolves matches is endangering lives.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Councillor Stu Goldsmith, Reform member for Fallings Park, told Wolverhampton Council’s regulatory committee last month that some hooligans file down 50p pieces then hurl them into the crowd below, potentially causing deep head wounds or blindness. He also alleged that flares are being smuggled into Molineux, set off or thrown.

Councillor Simon Bennett, leader of the council’s Conservative group, rejected the claims as alarmist and said any evidence should be handed to police. He warned that such statements could even jeopardise renewal of the stadium’s safety licence. He suggested the allegations sounded like something from the 1980s.

Bennett pointed out that the Sports Grounds Safety Authority’s March 2026 audit gave the council’s oversight of Molineux a score of 100 out of 100, rated low risk and praised safety management standards.

Wolves were contacted for comment. Goldsmith declined to add to his remarks.
