A Rio de Janeiro court has rejected Vasco’s urgent bid to stage the Copa do Brasil quarter-final against Vitória at the Maracanã on 26 August. The decision leaves São Januário as the immediate option for the tie.
According to Globo.com, the ruling addresses only the urgent injunction. The broader dispute over Vasco’s right to use the Maracanã remains open, and the club can appeal.
Vasco went to court after the concessionaire said the venue could not be made available on that date. The club sought to enforce a contract arranged last year with the stadium operators, arguing Flamengo and Fluminense’s justifications for a veto were insufficient.
The concessionaire said the week of 23 to 29 August had been reserved in full for pitch recovery. Its technical plan required uninterrupted work, which it argued made the match unfeasible.
Flamengo and Fluminense, via the concessionaire Fla-Flu Serviços S.A., maintained the refusal stemmed from a pre-set technical programme. They added that last year’s agreement for Vasco to use the stadium has no validity because it was never signed.
The decision considered there was no risk of the fixture not taking place because alternative venues in Rio de Janeiro are available. The concessionaire also cited a precedent from the Tribunal de Justiça do Rio in a previous Vasco-Maracanã dispute.
