Thibaut Courtois made history on Wednesday night, becoming the first goalkeeper to record multiple assists in a single UEFA Champions League season.
In Real Madrid’s Round of 16 first-leg clash against Manchester City, the Belgian’s long, precise pass from his own penalty area found Fede Valverde on the right wing.
Valverde controlled the ball, bypassed the City keeper, and slotted it home to give Madrid a 1-0 lead - the first of three first-half goals for the Spanish giants.
This marks Courtois’ second assist in this season’s Champions League campaign. Earlier in the season, he set up Kylian Mbappé for a goal in Real’s 5-0 win over Kairat Almaty. He had also previously registered an assist during his Chelsea days against Qarabag in 2017.
With this latest contribution, Courtois overtakes Oliver Kahn, who has two career assists in Europe’s premier competition.
