Coventry City beat Derby County 3-2 on Friday, moving 11 points clear of new nearest challengers Millwall with six matches remaining. Promotion to the Premier League has never looked closer.

Earlier in the evening, Millwall beat Middlesbrough 2-1. According to L'Équipe, Middlesbrough began matchweek 40 as Coventry’s closest rivals in the Championship title race.

Later, Coventry capitalised, edging a lively contest. Substitute Jack Rudoni struck a decisive brace, giving him five goals in his past four outings after missing the previous four squads.

Frank Lampard’s side have tightened their grip at the top. Ipswich Town are fourth, three points behind Millwall, and hold two games in hand. Coventry have not featured in the Premier League since relegation in 2001, and were founded in 1883.

Leicester, champions in 2016 with Jamie Vardy, N'Golo Kanté and Riyad Mahrez, sit 22nd, occupying the highest relegation place. They trail Portsmouth by one point and have played one more match. Gary Rowett’s side drew 2-2 with Preston on Thursday and are in trouble.
