Victor Torp has started this season in fine form for Frank Lampard's Sky Blues
It's taken a year and a half to properly settle into his new surroundings, but Victor Torp is firing on all cylinders for Coventry City this season.
The Dane swapped Sarpsborg for the West Midlands in January 2024, but couldn't seem to earn regular gametime under Mark Robins, and with the likes of Ben Sheaf, Gustavo Hamer and Callum O'Hare competing with him at times, it was always going to be difficult to break into the side.
But now those three have departed, the former of whom left this summer due to Torp forcing him down the pecking order.
The 26-year-old had to be patient and bide his time to get to a position where he is now one of Frank Lampard's key players, and now the £2.1 million Coventry parted with to bring Torp to the club is looking even more like a steal as the weeks go by.
In the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, Torp started just eight Championship games out of the 15 he appeared in. Then, in the infancy of last season, under Mark Robins, he started six of the first 14.
Frank Lampard took over on November 28 last year, and since then, Torp has played a part in 20 Championship games - 16 of which have come in the starting eleven.
The 26-year-old made an immediate impression on the new boss, helped by netting an 88th-minute equaliser in Lampard's first game in charge in a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City. Torp repaid Lampard's faith in him by scoring four more times between then and the ankle injury picked up in April, which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.
Back fully fit to start the season, Lampard has kept with the 26-year-old, as the partnership he and Matt Grimes formed behind Jack Rudoni in the latter half of last season was a big catalyst for the Sky Blues' surge up the table under the former Chelsea boss, and once again, the Dane hasn't let him down.
Starting all four games to begin the new Championship campaign, Torp is currently joint-second in the second-tier scoring charts, after he netted four times in games against Derby County, QPR and Oxford United.
The Sky Blues have netted 14 times already in the league as we approach the September international break, and Lampard will find joy in seeing the goals spread across his entire frontline, as well as his midfield.
For Coventry, the aim this season is to continue their form under Lampard from last term and look to finally achieve Premier League promotion after being on the periphery for a few years now.
The Sky Blues were quiet in the transfer window, as Lampard has clearly put faith in his current crop of players staying and kicking on in his first full season at the CBS Arena. So far, albeit early in the season, Torp is showing clear signs of improvement this term.
Alongside his goals, the Dane has been solid in possession, getting on the ball and looking to progress Coventry up the field.
And with Ben Sheaf departing on deadline day to fellow Championship side Wrexham, Lampard has reinforced his faith in Torp, with the sale almost acting as a vote of confidence that the 26-year-old is capable of holding down that position across the whole season.
