Coventry City and Hull City meet for the first time in the Premier League on Saturday, despite the two clubs having played each other 53 times across their history, with Hull holding a narrow edge of 21 wins to 18 and 14 draws.

Both arrive as newly promoted sides but with contrasting fortunes from the opening weekend: Coventry were beaten 3-0 at champions Arsenal, while Hull produced the shock result of round one, beating Manchester United 2-0 at home. It is Coventry’s first Premier League home fixture in 25 years.

Recent meetings have been notably tight, with the last three all ending in draws, including both Championship fixtures last season finishing 0-0.

Both sides progressed in the Carabao Cup in midweek, Coventry beating Plymouth Argyle 4-2 with new signing Taiwo Awoniyi scoring and assisting on his full debut, and Hull edging past Stoke City on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Manager Sergej Jakirović has said his Hull side are “trying to prove people wrong” after being tipped by bookmakers for relegation.

Team news

Coventry City

Haji Wright is the only confirmed absentee, sidelined with a thigh injury, with no other fitness doubts reported. Frank Onyeka, who joined permanently from Brentford after a promotion-winning loan spell last season, is expected to keep his place in central midfield. Awoniyi is pushing for a first Premier League start after his impact off the bench in the Carabao Cup.

Hull City

Eliot Matazo (knee), Darko Gyabi (groin) and Jack Butland (arm) remain long-term absentees. Captain Lewie Coyle will have an ongoing ankle issue assessed ahead of kick-off, while Nobel Mendy, Semi Ajayi and Ryan Giles all came off with cramp against Manchester United but are expected to be fit to start. Matt Crooks and Regan Slater, who ranked among the division’s top five players for distance covered on matchday one, are set to continue as Hull’s midfield pairing.

Form

Coventry City

Lampard’s side were given a harsh introduction to the top flight at Arsenal, well beaten in a game that offered little to build on. The response in the cup was far more encouraging, Coventry scoring four times against League One opposition to reach the third round. Coventry collected 55 points from 23 home matches in the Championship last season, winning 17 and losing only twice, and this ground has been a considerable stronghold for them.

Hull City

Jakirović’s side have made an excellent start, extending their unbeaten run across all competitions to six matches with the penalty shootout win over Stoke. Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy both scored from set-piece situations in the win over Manchester United, Hull’s first Premier League victory since their promotion. Hull have lost only one of their last eight away league visits to Coventry, going down 2-1 in December 2024, giving them a solid recent record at this ground specifically.

Predicted lineups

Coventry City predicted XI (4-3-3): Rushworth; Van Ewijk, Thomas, Amenda, Dasilva; Onyeka, Grimes, Yirenkyi; Tchaouna, Awoniyi, Thomas-Asante

Hull City predicted XI (5-4-1): Tzolakis; Coyle, Ajayi, Egan, Mendy, Giles; Belloumi, Crooks, Slater, Stroud; McBurnie
