The Sky Blues aren't splashing their cash on wages.

Another slow, poor start to the season has hampered Coventry City in their push for promotion to the Premier League.

This team was one that was favoured by many to be a real contender to go up this season, and yet the hangover from last season seems to still be affecting them.

Last season they were coming off the back of heartbreak at Wembley, losing in the play-off final to Luton Town.

Coventry didn't get off the line well at all, let alone quickly, when the new campaign began last summer, creating a big gap to chase down by the end of the season. Once they'd got into gear, they'd left themselves too big of a gap to chase down.

In the middle of that, they reached an FA Cup semi-final, but once again lost in heartbreaking fashion, on penalties, at the home of English football to Manchester United.

Coventry clearly didn't learn from their last Wembley hangover, because they started this term poorly too.

When you look at their team, on paper, it looks like one that should be competitive at the top end of the Championship, again.

That said, when you look at the money being paid to their players, their average is quite significantly below the league average.

A Sky Blue player's average yearly earnings is estimated by Capology to be £442,480. The average estimated earning of every Championship player is £588,875 - around 25% higher than City's average.

Coventry have certainly set themselves a high bar to reach for, despite the financial resources that come from owner Doug King. They have generated a fair bit of money over the last couple of years through their success, but that won't cover all of the money that he has to put in.

Speaking of which, which player does King pay the most to?

According to Capology estimates, Luis Binks is the highest earning Coventry player.

The defender who initially moved to the CBS Arena on loan from Italian side Bologna became a permanent part of Mark Robins' side this summer, and with it came a very healthy £30,000 per week wage packet.

Luis Binks' wage compared to his Coventry teammates

The next highest earners at City are Haji Wright and Ellis Simms. Like Binks, they were both signed last summer, but they're not estimated to be on quite as much as their English teammate.

Simms and Wright are said to be earning £25,000 per week each.

When you compare Binks' wage to that of some of the other people that he shares a dressing room with, it really is surprising.

It's not much of a shock to see that a large chunk of the highest earners have been signed in recent times. That's not the case for star full-back Milan Van Ewijk though.

The Dutchman who was previously linked with PSV Eindhoven is estimated to be on a mere £3,000 per week. Now, compared to the average person, that salary is anything but mere. But it certainly pales in comparison to the wage packet that nets Binks 10 times more per week than Van Ewijk gets, according to Capology.
