The Sky Blues could lose some of their star players if they don't win promotion at the end of next term.

Coventry City's recruitment in recent years has been exceptional.

There will always be hits and misses, but plenty of the club's signings in recent years have worked out for the best and have played a big part in guiding the Sky Blues to where they are now.

Unfortunately, the club have been the victims of their own success in some cases, with a couple of their former star players being poached by other clubs.

Viktor Gyokeres, who was a prolific scorer for the club after joining permanently, has since moved on to Sporting Lisbon and could be set for a return to the Premier League sooner rather than later.

Gus Hamer, meanwhile, moved to then-Premier League club Sheffield United last summer, having established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Championship.

A consolation for the Sky Blues is the fact they were able to secure a decent amount of sale revenue for both players, which allowed them to make several additions during the previous summer window.

Some of these players listed above, including Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, have been major successes at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

And many of these players could generate the Sky Blues a healthy profit in the future, which will allow Mark Robins or a potential successor to spend more in the transfer market.

Coventry City have the right ingredients for success

Not only do they have an owner who is ambitious and a manager with an excellent record at the CBS Arena, but they also have a talented playing squad.

There's work to do in the goalkeeping department, but they have some talented defenders who will only get better, some promising wide players and two brilliant striker options, with Wright able to play as a striker as well as a winger.

There are areas that probably require more depth and quality, including their goalkeeping area, but there's plenty of time for them to make other signings before the window closes.

The permanent additions of Luis Binks and Jack Rudoni should only enhance their chances of winning promotion at the end of next term.

Some of Coventry City's star players could leave next summer if promotion isn't achieved

Coventry know that falling short of promotion next season would probably have consequences, considering the calibre of players they have.

After falling short at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, Callum O'Hare looks set to leave, which is a big blow considering how important the attacking midfielder has been for them since returning from his long-term injury.

United States international Wright, following a productive first season at the CBS Arena, could be one player who leaves the club next summer if he enjoys another good campaign next term.

At 26 and having plenty of time to grow, he is the sort of player that would attract plenty of interest, especially if he can prove his worth in the Championship two seasons in a row like Gyokeres did.

Ben Sheaf, meanwhile, has been the subject of interest in recent weeks, with the likes of Ipswich Town and Fulham thought to be keen on him.

In the absence of Hamer, Sheaf has been such a crucial cog in central midfield but with his contract not expiring until the summer of 2026, they aren't under major pressure to sell him this summer.

It may be a different story next summer though, if the player doesn't put pen to paper on an extension before then.

And Milan van Ewijk is another player who enjoyed a successful 2023/24 season, moving to England from the Netherlands and proving to be a real asset out wide.

Able to operate as a full-back, he can also play further forward and that makes him a particularly useful player to have, with Robins having the option to switch between a back four and a back three.

Having only signed a long-term deal last summer, the Sky Blues are in a strong negotiating position when it comes to the Dutchman, but they may come under pressure to sell the full-back and others if they fail to secure promotion at the end of next term.
