In one of the stunning results of the round, CRB advanced to the round of 16 by defeating the defending champions Palmeiras on penalties after defeating the hosts 1 nil in regular time.
The visiting side were able to keep their cool throughout the game, despite scoring an early goal, thanks to an amazing effort from CRB goalkeeper Diogo Silva.
Verdao, on the other hand, controlled ball possession but was unable to make out a goal against the visitors’ defence.
Palmeiras had an opportunity to come back into the game and take the lead over CRB early on. After a great cross from Ron, goalie Diogo Silva denied a shot from Wesley.
CRB took an unexpected lead with a goal a few minutes later. Diego Torres cut through the middle and found Ewandro, who tapped in to bring the visitors even on the scoreboard.
Verdao raised their game intensity to reclaim the lead when the aggregated scores even out.
Gum heroically stopped a goal-scoring opportunity from Ron on the line after Gustavo Scarpa’s free kick struck the post. Scarpa then fluffed another effort from outside the box.
In the opposition area, Palmeiras commanded possession, moving the ball around regularly and attempting high balls. The hosts were unable to score despite having more possession of the ball.
Palmeiras continued their offensive approach from the first half after the break. After a blunder by Gum in the opening minute of the second half, Luiz Adriano came close to equalizing, but Diogo Silva stopped his effort to keep the score line intact.
Late in the second half, CRB almost made it 2-0 when Diego Torres received a wonderful pass, beat Felipe Melo, and put the ball in the bottom corner, but Weverton was there to stop the Argentine’s effort.
CRB advanced to the next round after defeating Palmeiras 4-3 on penalties. For Palmeiras, Willian, Gustavo Scarpa and Victor Luis scored. Lucas Lima, Breno Lopes, Luiz Adriano and Marcos Rocha missed their efforts. And on the CRB side, Diego Torres, Hyuri, Jatobá and Diogo Silva scored the goals. Guilherme Romão, Reginaldo and Dudu missed.
For the Brazilian Championship, Palmeiras will look to return to winning ways against Corinthians on Saturday.
