The Columbus Crew will take an advantage to the Estadio BBVA in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-final after delivering Monterrey their first Champions Cup loss in five years.
Scorers: Hernández 25 Russel-Rowe 71′ ; Meza 58′
As the final MLS club remaining in the competition, the Crew needed a big home result to bring to Mexico, where MLS clubs tend to crash and burn.
They got just the start they were looking for after piling on the pressure in the first half, as Crew talisman Cucho Hernández found the back of the net to set the home crowd alight.
Like most Liga MX clubs in the Champions Cup, Monterrey found their moment after the break, as a superb team move was capped off by Maximiliano Meza to level the score, and more importantly snatch an all-important away goal for the visitors.
While it looked like the game would fizzle out from there, the Crew fought back to find the lead again when Jacen Russell-Rowe headed home on a set-piece.
