Arsenal claimed an important 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby to re-establish their title credentials.
The Gunners made light work of their injury-riddled rivals and pushed them further into the relegation battle for good measure.
Arsenal desperately needed three points after some poor results in recent games, and players like Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres stepped up.
Mikel Arteta’s side was up to the task from the first minute. Even those who came on from the bench helped the cause immensely, especially Cristhian Mosquera.
Mosquera came on for Jurrien Timber in the right-back role and locked down the flank with authority, dealing with Djed Spence and Xavi Simons.
Mosquera won 5/5 tackles (100%) and made two clearances. He completed 8/10 of his passes and played one key pass.
Sam Dean of The Telegraph wrote on Twitter, “Have a feeling that signing Cristhian Mosquera for £13m could turn out to be one of Arsenal’s best deals in a long, long time.
“At the very least, he’s already got huge resale value. (William) Saliba & Gabriel (Magalhaes) seriously need to stay on their toes. Mosquera looks ready to challenge them both.”
For now, Mosquera may have to bide his time behind Saliba and Gabriel, but that should not be viewed as a limitation. Rather, it is the perfect environment for his growth.
Learning alongside two established, elite-level centre-backs while gaining minutes in high-pressure matches is exactly how a future star is moulded.
At just £13 million, Arsenal may have secured more than just depth. They may have secured their long-term defensive pillar.
Mosquera has the athleticism, composure and defensive aggression Arteta demands. He is the ideal back-up today, but tomorrow he could be indispensable.
If he continues on this trajectory, Arsenal will have a world-class centre-back on their hands, one capable of serving the club for years to come.
