Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a massive lift ahead of this evening’s showdown against Chelsea in North London, with Cristian Romero declared fit.
The Tottenham captain has been out for nearly a month and missed four games during that time frame.
He sustained an adductor strain during the warm-up as Spurs prepared for a game on October 19.
However, manager Thomas Frank confirmed that Romero is ready to return to action and could feature from the start in the London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Argentine international’s (46 caps) comeback headlines a positive injury update that also includes Destiny Udogie and Wilson Odobert.
Udogie has recovered from a knee injury sustained on international duty in early October.
Meanwhile, Odobert is back from a minor side strain that kept him out of the midweek Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday (via THFC’s website), Frank praised the medical team for the fantastic job they have done.
The boost comes at a crucial time for Spurs, who remain without Radu Dragusin, Yves Bissouma, and James Maddison.
Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, Kota Takai, and Ben Davies also remain sidelined.
Still, the return of Romero’s leadership and Udogie’s dynamism offers fresh optimism as Tottenham aim to strengthen their top-four bid.
Chelsea are there for the taking if Spurs bring their A-game and Romero’s return bolsters their chances. The Blues have notably struggled to deal with direct teams and set-pieces.
They are great at attacking set pieces, but it is also an Achilles heel for their defence.
Tottenham must exploit this weakness with Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Joao Palhinha.
Frank’s direct style can cause Chelsea’s tentative backline to make mistakes, and Spurs have a fantastic opportunity to compound their misery.
In Chelsea’s last game, they conceded three goals to Wolverhampton Wanderers despite leading 3-0, with the goals coming from throw-ins, set pieces, and direct play.
Tottenham must seize this opportunity to claim a decisive scalp and snap a run of four successive games without a win against Chelsea.
