Cristian Romero ‘to join’ Atlético Madrid in €40m move | OneFootball

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero is close to joining Atlético Madrid in a €40m move, The Athletic reports.

The clubs are working on terms that include a 15% sell-on on any future profit.

The Argentina defender, 28, has been pursued abroad since the start of the window and is expected to leave Spurs this summer. He has worn the armband since April 2025.

Inter Milan and Arsenal had been linked, but a switch to Atlético is now the most advanced option.

Romero completed a permanent move to Tottenham in 2022 for €50m excluding bonuses after a season on loan from Atalanta. He has made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals.

A World Cup winner with Argentina, he has 58 caps and four goals. In 2025 he captained Spurs to the Europa League title, the club’s third in the competition.
