Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, missed training then left Portugal’s camp without permission, increasing tension around his national-team future.
According to A Bola, Portuguese federation regulations state that any duly called-up player who abandons or fails to attend a national-team activity without justification can be suspended for one to six months. Professionals can also be fined between 5 and 10 UC, about 500 to 1,000 euros at 102 euros per unit.
The Al-Nassr forward has 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal.
He stayed on the bench against Wales, a 1-0 win on 24 September, then skipped the following training session.
At a news conference, head coach Jorge Jesus said there was no problem with Ronaldo. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner later announced his departure.
Jesus, 72, and federation president Pedro Proença tried to stop him leaving, even going to the airport.
