Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national-team camp, the forward said in an Instagram post on Wednesday evening.

The 41-year-old was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Norway, then missed the group session on Tuesday during a stop in Malmö, Sweden.

On Wednesday he departed the Copenhagen stadium before Portugal’s scheduled eve-of-match training. Portugal face Denmark on Thursday at 20:45.

In his post, Ronaldo said his decision followed head coach Jorge Jesus’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

He plans to explain his reasons in due course and has wished Portugal and all his team-mates good luck.

An emergency meeting had involved Jesus, Ronaldo and Proença, who travelled to Denmark at short notice.
