Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at six World Cups as Portugal thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0, the 41-year-old striking twice in their second group game. He has now scored at the finals in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.
According to L'Équipe, the Al-Nassr forward answered criticism over a slow start to this tournament with a sharp reminder of his finishing power.
His landmark could stand for a while. He is eighth on the competition’s all-time scoring list with 10, level with Thomas Müller, Gary Lineker and Gabriel Batistuta.
Behind him, Lionel Messi has scored in five editions, 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026, and is the tournament’s record marksman with 18 goals from six tournaments.
Three players have found the net at four World Cups. Pelé did so in 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970, scoring 12 across four tournaments, Uwe Seeler registered nine over the same years, and Miroslav Klose hit 16 in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014.
If they feature in 2030, Kylian Mbappé or Harry Kane could join that select group.
