Cristiano Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, scored twice against Uzbekistan in Houston as Portugal played their second World Cup match on Tuesday.
He needed only six minutes to find the net, turning in a Joao Cancelo cross at the near post past Abdouvakhid Nematov. According to L'Équipe, the display came amid scrutiny from the Portuguese press in recent days.
The 41-year-old’s place in the starting XI had been questioned after a poor showing against DR Congo in the group K opener last Wednesday.
Ronaldo struck again 33 minutes later, this time in transition, running onto a through ball from Bruno Fernandes before finishing.
The goals mean he has now scored at a sixth different World Cup, after 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022, making him the first man to achieve the feat.
