Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence after leaving Portugal’s training camp early, saying he will reveal the truth behind his decision in due time.

The Al-Nassr forward issued a statement after Portugal manager Jorge Jesus’ latest press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca.

“Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team camp,” Ronaldo said.

“In due course, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always been fully committed.”

Ronaldo added: “For now, it is time to wish Portugal and all my teammates, without exception, the very best of luck.”

His decision comes due to tension following his omission from Portugal’s starting XI for their Nations League clash with Norway.

Jesus started Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos up front, and both players scored in the 2-1 victory, while Ronaldo remained on the bench despite warming up in the second half.

The 41-year-old went straight to the dressing room after the final whistle. He didn’t greet the travelling supporters, further fuelling speculation about his relationship with the new Portugal boss.

Jesus insisted there was no personal disagreement, explaining that he had already told Ronaldo on Tuesday that he might not play in their upcoming game against Denmark.

“I told the player he wasn’t going to play,” Jesus said. “If I need you for 30 minutes, you’ll play; if not, you won’t. No player will make me change my mind.”

The Portuguese FA president subsequently travelled to Copenhagen for a meeting involving Jesus and Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.

Ronaldo has 979 goals in 1,338 appearances across a remarkable 23-year professional career. He remains focused on reaching 1,000 career goals.
