A chant used by Saudi Arabia fans to mock Lionel Messi at the 2022 World Cup has resurfaced, and it was brought up during a Brazilian TV exchange with Al-Nassr goalkeeper Bento.

Bento said: “I don’t understand a word of Arabic, so even if I were insulted, I wouldn’t understand; I only know a few simple words.” He was speaking to X Sports.

The presenter then referenced the taunt sung after Saudi Arabia’s shock win over Argentina, recalling a line that claimed they had broken Messi’s eye.

Bento smiled but offered no further comment. He has been at Al-Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo since the start of the 2024-2025 season.

In that 2022 group match, Argentina led through an early Messi penalty before Saudi Arabia hit back just after half-time. Saleh Al-Shehri equalised, then Salem Al-Dossari struck the winner for a 2-1 upset.

The long-standing Messi-Ronaldo rivalry has often spilled into the stands and online, where supporters of both players trade chants and barbs to champion their chosen great.
