Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp unexpectedly, and now could face disciplinary action under the federation’s rules, including a suspension of one to six months and a financial penalty.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday afternoon in a statement that he had departed, and said the squad would continue preparations with the remaining 24 players.
The FPF disciplinary code states that any player who unjustifiably leaves or fails to attend training, a match or any national-team activity can be suspended for one to six months and fined 500 to 1,000 euros. It also provides for automatic preventive suspension from the moment of any such departure.
Ronaldo addressed the issue on social media, saying he would give fuller explanations in due course.
His exit clouded the build-up to Denmark v Portugal tonight at 20:45, the third matchday of the Nations League group stage.
In Portugal there has been talk that his international chapter is over following this incident, but that remains unconfirmed.
