Crysencio Summerville said West Ham had let themselves down after Premier League relegation. The Hammers beat Leeds 3-0 on the final day, but Tottenham’s win over Everton rendered it meaningless.
West Ham finished on 39 points, two behind Spurs and eight adrift of Leeds in 14th. The player said in a post on Instagram that the Irons’ support gave the team hope and pushed them to keep fighting until the end.
He expressed regret at letting fans down and said that closeness to survival made the pain sharper. Summerville also stressed that West Ham are too big and powerful to stay down, adding that the comeback starts now.
The winger had stayed to chase promotion with Leeds in 2023 and shone under Daniel Farke. Defeat to Southampton in the play-off final preceded a summer move, with West Ham triggering a release clause worth just over £25 million plus add-ons.
His immediate focus will now turn to the World Cup after a first call-up to the Netherlands national team, having missed March through injury. Summerville could come up against two current Leeds players, with the Netherlands set to face Gabriel Gudmundsson’s Sweden and Ao Tanaka’s Japan. Tunisia are the fourth nation in the group.
