Crystal Palace captain Dean Henderson faces a spell out with a persistent ankle injury, ruling him out of club and country until mid-October, according to Goal.com.

The 29-year-old missed Saturday’s 3-2 defeat by Ipswich Town and is expected to sit out a run of fixtures, including Thursday’s Europa League opener against Lech Poznan and Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leeds United.

Manager Pierre Sage said the problem dates back to a pre-season defeat by Freiburg, adding that Henderson has played through pain with limited training and the club do not want to risk him.

The setback is set to have international implications, with Henderson expected to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for three UEFA Nations League group matches in late September and early October.

Sage also made a firm call at centre-back, leaving 20-year-old Jaydee Canvot out of the Ipswich squad for performance reasons after Palace conceded 11 goals in their opening four league matches. He said the decision followed Canvot’s display against Fulham and his work in training, and he expects a positive response on Monday.
