As a Crystal Palace supporter, the feeling around this report is one of deep frustration. Eberechi Eze has been the heartbeat of our attacking play, the one player capable of unlocking defences and changing the tempo of a game. To lose him to Tottenham, of all clubs, cuts especially deep.

What makes it worse is that we appear to be scrambling for a replacement at the last minute. Tyler Dibling may be talented, but he is still unproven at Premier League level. We should not be in a position where the club’s entire creative spark rests on an 18-year-old who has yet to kick a ball in the top flight. It feels like a gamble rather than a plan.

Southampton’s tough stance also worries me. If Everton are willing to put £45 million on the table and still get turned down, how on earth are we going to afford him? The board have talked about smart recruitment for years, but there is nothing smart about letting Eze leave without having a guaranteed replacement in place.
