Defender could fill a problem position for the Three Lions

Oliver Glasner has tipped Tyrick Mitchell to force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for next year’s World Cup.

The Three Lions are lacking at left-back, with previous first-choice options Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell out of favour with the new boss.

Since his arrival at the helm, Tuchel has fielded Myles Lewis-Skelly, Reece James and Nico O’Reilly in that position, and has overlooked Crystal Palace’s Mitchell, who had previously been given call-ups by Gareth Southgate.

He won his first international cap in a 2-1 win over Switzerland in March 2022.

Mitchell played a starring role in Palace’s late 2-1 victory at Fulham on Sunday; a result that saw the Eagles fly into the top four of the Premier League.

Glasner heaped praise on the left wing-back in his 3-4-2-1 shape.

“I was very impressed with T," said Glasner. "I told him after the game that I'm pretty sure if he continues playing like this, he will be in consideration for the World Cup with England because he’s doing so well.

“Not just defensively. He's such a great defender, but the balls today in behind [were great].

“He makes better decisions. When he passed into the middle and [Nathaniel] Clyne had the chance in the first half at the far post, he could see there was no space in behind and played a cutback.

“He had two or three great crosses in behind in the second half because the space was there. Sometimes it's in behind and sometimes it's in the cutback. You have to make the decision.

“The job of the players inside is to be there and they were, now T’s finding them more and more. He's really playing on a very high level right now.”
