Crystal Palace were dealt a major blow in the early stages of their FA Cup fifth round clash with Millwall on Saturday, with top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta stretchered off and rushed to hospital with a concerning-looking head injury.

Mateta had to be attended to by physios and was given oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off, after he had been kicked in the face by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts.

Referee Michael Oliver watched the incident back on the pitchside monitor before deciding to show Roberts a deserved red card.

But it was little comfort to Mateta, who was put straight into an ambulance after leaving the field on a stretcher.

Palace chairman and co-owner Steve Parish was not happy when he was asked about the incident at half-time.

Fingers crossed the Frenchman is OK and recovers quickly.
