Spain’s referees’ committee, the CTA, has clarified three contentious incidents from matchday 23 and defended the officials’ calls, notably ruling out a Barcelona penalty shout against Mallorca, as reported by as.com.

Levante were reduced to 10 during the first half at San Mamés after a straight red for Matturro, who held Iñaki Williams as he advanced towards the area. The hold continued until Williams could have controlled the ball, meeting DOGSO criteria on distance, direction, control and number of defenders.

At Camp Nou, Barcelona appealed for handball by David López after a Lamine shot. His arm was slightly away to hold his mark on Lewandowski, did not make the body unnaturally bigger and added no extra movement, so no penalty.

The law also says handball is not given when the ball comes from short range with no time to react and the arm position is natural. VAR did not intervene, the on-field decision was judged correct.

At the Sánchez-Pizjuán, another non-penalty involved Akor Adams. Contact with the arm after a previous deliberate touch by the same player is not an offence, often termed play the ball.
