Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi stepped up to the microphones after the hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Although pleased with the three points, the young centre back made it clear that the squad still has significant areas to refine.

Cubarsi acknowledged the spirit shown by the team but was equally quick to highlight the tendency to fall behind early in matches.

Offering a candid assessment, he explained, “We’re improving. Sometimes, due to a lapse in concentration, we concede goals, and we need to focus on that to try to keep a clean sheet.

“It’s important for us and for Joan Garcia. It’s easier to win when you keep a clean sheet.”

Analysing the match

Reflecting on the flow of the match, Cubarsi admitted that Frankfurt surprised them with their initial approach.

He described the shift in momentum with honesty, saying, “In the first half, we didn’t expect this approach, but they sat back too much.

“I think we lacked energy in the final third and because of a mistake, they took the lead.

“I think we have to improve on that, but then the team showed a lot of character.

“In the second half, with the support of the fans, we were able to impose our rhythm and I think the victory was ours.”

Praise for Gerard Martin

One of his most enthusiastic remarks was reserved for his recent defensive partner, Gerard Martin. Praising the young defender’s importance, Cubarsi said, “Gerard is performing spectacularly.”

He elaborated on their developing connection, adding, “I’m very happy for him because he’s a very hard-working guy who works every day. He’s been given the opportunity and he’s making the most of it

“I feel very comfortable with him, just like with the other centre-backs. We all have quality and we’re playing very well this season.

“In these last few games, I’ve been paired with Gerard and I think we’re making a good duo.”

Joan Garcia takes the stage

Goalkeeper Joan Garcia echoed the admiration for Martín’s growth. Highlighting his adaptability, Garcia said,

“Gerard Martín is playing more and more as a centre-back. He’s performing well and helping the team.

“I hope he continues to improve,” before revealing a light-hearted anecdote from before kick-off: “I told Jules he was going to score and he scored twice.”

Garcia concluded with an honest reflection on Barcelona’s defensive inconsistencies, stating,

“We still have to improve. We’re not keeping clean sheets and we’re conceding goals early on.

“We’re trying to get back into our rhythm, but we’re gradually seeing improvements. We knew it was going to be a difficult game because they defend well,” he concluded.
